Thigh High Socks
Everything old is new again, and that couldn’t be more true than when talking about thigh high socks. While a handful of years ago, seeing a woman wearing socks or stockings above her knees for a fashion statement would have seemed more than a little out of date, today it is very fashionable, as it was a few decades ago as well as going back many years to around the mid 1500′s to about 1600 when they first came on the scene. For many years since, the look of thigh high socks or stockings has been fun and sexy… just think of the classic French maid look. Today though, these fun (and functional) length socks are used by many people for both fun, fashion and functionality.
From a purely health perspective, thigh highs are often preferred over full pantyhose for a number of reasons and situations. For women who are undergoing urological surgery, thigh high stockings are often recommended to help prevent the possibility of varicose veins, also called deep venous thrombosis. They are also often preferred as the compression stocking length of choice because as compared to stockings that only go just above the knee, thigh highs are less likely to bunch and buckle behind the knee, making them much more comfortable to wear.
Thigh high stockings have other advantages for women too. For example, compared to full pantyhose, there is considerably more ventilation available, which helps reduce the risk of bacteria and fungi growth. Also, when it comes time to use the rest room, thigh highs are undoubtedly easier and faster to deal with than if you were to be wearing complete hose.
Thigh high sock are typically held in place by one of a couple of ways. One option you may choose to use to keep them up is a garter belt, which can be a part of an overall fashion statement in and of itself. Garter belts normally have either 4 or six straps with metal clasps at the end which attach to the top of the stockings to hold them in place. If you have your choice between 4 or 6 strap garters, go with the 6. Doing so will help keep the stockings more aligned, which you will appreciate if you happen to have stockings with a seam going down the back.
If you would prefer not to mess with a garter belt, many of today’s above the knee socks and stockings come lined with grip strips, which work very nicely to keep the elasticized socks securely in place. Of course this doesn’t work for everyone as some people have skin that is sensitive to elastic. Also, some people find that it gets uncomfortable after some time, and that the rubberized elastic can start to get damp from sweat.
The thing about thigh high socks and stockings is that they can offer so much for so many different people. They can be fun, sexy, functional (think compression stockings), and healthy. They come in all styles from standard, nearly impossible to notice classic colors to wild and crazy tie-dyed varieties, or sexy fishnet or vertical striped varieties. They come in sizes for everything from the skinny legged teen to the more curvaceous, voluptuous mature woman. With all these options and varieties available to you, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t investigate thigh high socks and stockings further and add some to your wardrobe. And it is highly recommended that you have a lot of fun and a little adventure while you’re at it.
If you’re a little tentative about going all the way to the thigh high sock level, you could always ease your way into things by investigating some of the fun options available to you in girls knee high socks too.
